Year 3–5 WEMT

One program. Three years. Four essential skills. One weekly class bringing together Writing, English, Mathematics and Thinking Skills, building from strong foundations in Year 3 through OC preparation in Year 4 and Selective preparation in Year 5.

The four components

Four skills. One complete program.

Every class brings together Writing, English, Mathematics and Thinking Skills. Rather than teaching them in isolation, WEMT develops the ability to apply them together, just as students need to in the OC and Selective tests.

Writing

Write with structure. Think with clarity. Build vocabulary, sentence control, structure, creativity and extended writing skills.

English

Read deeply. Understand clearly. Develop comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and the ability to interpret unfamiliar texts.

Mathematics

Build fluency. Strengthen reasoning. Develop mathematical understanding, problem-solving and the ability to apply concepts in unfamiliar situations.

Thinking Skills

Think logically. Solve strategically. Build pattern recognition, deduction, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Year 3 · Foundation

Year 3 WEMT

Year 3 is our foundation year, where students build all four components properly, at a pace they can absorb and apply.

Most Year 3 students have never been asked to write to a time limit or explain how they reached an answer. We start by building those habits gradually, so that by Year 4, timed work feels familiar rather than overwhelming.

  • Writing from structurePlanning first, then drafting, so a blank page stops being intimidating.
  • Reading for meaningComprehension beyond literal recall, which is where the OC questions live.
  • Mathematical reasoningWord problems and number sense, worked aloud and explained back.
  • Introduction to thinking skillsLogic and pattern questions met early, so they are familiar rather than strange.

Year 4 · OC test year

Year 4 WEMT

The OC test demands more than knowledge, students need to apply their skills accurately under time pressure.

From Term 2 students sit full timed papers, marked and returned with worked solutions. The point is not the mark. It is that sitting a paper under time becomes ordinary well before the day it matters.

  • Timed practice papersFull papers from Term 2, marked and reviewed with worked solutions.
  • Writing under the clockPlan, draft and refine within a set time, with feedback built into the process.
  • Question triageLearn which questions to tackle first, which to return to and how to manage time effectively.
  • Application & strategyUnderstand the process, expectations and practical steps involved in the OC journey.
Year 5 · Selective preparation

Year 5 WEMT

The Selective test comes in Year 6. Year 5 is where students build the depth, confidence and exam readiness they need before test year.

The content steps up in difficulty, with writing becoming a particular focus. Students receive detailed feedback, redraft their work and learn how to turn feedback into improvement.

  • Writing as the priorityEvery piece is planned, marked and redrafted.
  • Challenging readingUnseen texts that develop deeper comprehension and interpretation.
  • Extended reasoningMulti-step problems that reward thinking and method, not just recall.
  • Selective preparationBuild the skills, strategies and confidence needed for the Year 6 test.

Timetable

Weekly classes

Most groups meet at the Bella Vista campus. One or two run live online each week for families who can't make the drive, same teacher, same material. Times are confirmed once you enrol, and a new group opens as soon as one fills.

Current class days and times are confirmed once you enquire, book a trial or ask us and we will send what is available for your child's year level.

Live online classes are capped at eight students and follow the same curriculum, materials and teaching approach as our campus classes.

Next step

Tell us the year your child is in and what you would like them to get out of it. We will recommend a class and reply within one business day.
